About Karen
Karen Bezuidenhout is a Santa Barbara-based artist who grew up on a farm in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Her passion for painting was sparked in 1996 after attending a local art exhibition, leading her to join Pieter Vermaak’s art school, located in a charming old wine cellar.
In 2000, she moved with her husband and children to Santa Barbara, where she met influential painter Bill Woolway. Her work soon gained wider attention and is now cherished in homes across the United States and world wide.
Karen’s work is shaped by her global travels and lifelong love of horses. From riding on horseback across the Namib Desert, the mountains of Patagonia and Italy, the ancient landscapes of Spain, and South Africa, each painting captures the spirit of these adventures.
Karen paints intuitively and her paintings are described as “primitive yet sophisticated” and “peaceful, healing and medicinal.” Her pieces—mainly in acrylic and oil stick—are created in her rustic outdoor studio, surrounded by dogs and music.
“I paint from my heart. I don’t follow rules. I paint what I feel and follow my brush. All my paintings are tapestries of my life and imagination.”
